About Wisconsin

Dairy built Wisconsin, but the farm map is bigger than the barn. The Driftless Area, the corner the glaciers missed, folds into steep ridges and coulees now dotted with young vineyards. The Central Sands grows the potatoes and floods the cranberry bogs. In between run the river valleys and rolling pasture that gave the state its reputation. Nearly all of it is open to visitors: working farms, artisan producers, and farm stands run by people who will tell you exactly how the cheese got made.

Geography does a lot of the sorting. Along Lake Michigan, Door County's cherry and apple orchards draw U-pick crowds every season, and the lake effect that ripens the fruit also feeds a cluster of vineyards. Inland, farmland around the Kettle Moraine State Forest hosts farm stays where the day starts with chores instead of a continental breakfast. Craft breweries thread through it all, sourcing local grain and hops, some brewing right on the farm, especially in the Fox River Valley and near the bigger cities.

The old barns have found a second career. Across the Baraboo Hills and the coulees of Western Wisconsin, historic timber-frame structures now host weddings, pairing weathered board with catering pulled from the surrounding fields. Plenty of farms run tours, petting yards, and seasonal events that put visitors a handshake away from the people growing their food. Every ticket sold keeps a working farm working.

Farmers' markets make a good scouting trip. Producers from across the state set up side by side, so you can taste a cheese or a cider first and plan the farm visit second. A quiet farm stay, a bucket of cherries, a barn strung with lights for a wedding, Wisconsin's farms have been at this a long time, and it shows.
