About Iowa

Corn to the horizon is the postcard version of Iowa. The better version starts when you turn off the highway: family U-pick orchards tucked into river valleys, vineyards climbing the Loess Hills, farm stands where the person weighing your berries picked them that morning. Iowa's agritourism puts you on the ground of the most productive farmland in the country, close enough to see how it actually works.

The geography rewards a road trip. Western Iowa's Loess Hills (steep, wind-built ridges found almost nowhere else on earth), now carry vineyards and farm stays with long views over the terraces. Eastern Iowa rolls toward the Mississippi through berry farms and apple orchards. The central plains hold the big U-pick operations and the corn mazes that draw families every fall. Each region grows something worth stopping for, and none of it looks quite like the others.

The farms have widened what they offer, too. Craft breweries have set up on working farms, turning local grain into beer poured a few hundred feet from where it grew. Barns and farmsteads across the state now host weddings and events against pastures instead of parking lots. You can spend a night in a farmhouse surrounded by corn, fill a bucket with berries on a July afternoon, or get married with a hayfield as the backdrop, all of it real working landscape, not a set.
