Apple orchards hang off the hillsides of Bluff Country in Minnesota's southeast, where vineyards trace the Mississippi and the land folds into river valleys. West and north, the plains around the Twin Cities flatten out into some of the most productive farm ground in the country. Between the two runs a working landscape you can actually walk into: farms that open their gates, hand you a bucket, and let you see where dinner comes from. Each corner of the state does it differently. Along the St. Croix River Valley near Stillwater, U-pick berry farms and big apple orchards pull in families every harvest weekend. South of the metro, the Cannon River Valley, with Northfield and Faribault as its anchor towns, has become the place where old farmsteads turn into vineyards and craft breweries, pouring tastings in buildings that spent a century doing other work. You leave with produce in the trunk, but the setting is half of what you came for.

And you don't have to leave at dusk. Farm stays across Minnesota put guests in the middle of the routine, up with the animals, welcome at the chores. Historic barns and renovated farmhouses have found second lives as wedding venues, rough timber and all.
