About Maine

Potato fields in Aroostook County. Blueberry barrens Down East. Apple orchards in the foothills of the Western Mountains. Maine farm country is really several farm countries, stitched together by a coastline and a lot of forest, and the farms here still run on the calendar: sap in the spring mud, berries in July heat, trees cut in the snow. Visit at different times of year and you'll meet a different state.

The thickest concentration of diversified farms sits in the central and southern river valleys, the Kennebec and Androscoggin, where U-pick berries, vegetable operations, and Christmas tree farms cluster within a short drive of each other. Down on the milder Midcoast, vineyards coax cold-hardy grapes through the winters and pour them in small tasting rooms, while farm breweries brew with grain and hops grown a field or two away. These are working operations first; the tour, the tasting, the bag of berries you carry out, all of it comes straight off the land you're standing on.

Stay longer and the experience deepens. Farm stays here run from rustic cabins to renovated guesthouses on active farms, often with a farm-to-table dinner on the table and chores you're welcome to watch or join. The same weathered barns and open fields draw couples looking for wedding venues, especially through the Lakes Region and along the scenic routes of the Maine Highlands, where the landscape does most of the decorating.

What holds it together is how seriously Maine takes its agricultural inheritance. The state backs its local producers, and the farms repay the attention with specialty: artisanal cheese in Waldo County, heritage breed livestock around the Belgrade Lakes, growers raising produce for the restaurants down the road. Pick a direction, and there's a farm doing something particular at the end of it.
